Simplify Your Packing: Top Tips for Enjoying Organized Travel

While vacations are usually exciting or relaxing, they can sometimes be overwhelming. At least when it comes to packing.

You probably don’t even realize the impact packing can have on your ability to have a nice vacation. But a well packed trip sets you up for a joyful trip.

I mean who wants to be running around looking for a charger, trying to remember if you brought toiletries, or perhaps even having to head back home for travel documents?

Yeah, no thanks. The reason we go on vacation is to relax or have fun. Certainly not to be stressed out.

Make a Packing List

Why is making a list so important? Well, to state the obvious, so you don’t forget anything!

One of my favorite tips is to actually keep a standard list (I use Google Keep) of all the reoccuring items I need when I go on vacation. That way, you do not have to re-write the same list every time you go on a trip. Then, you can just add in the items that are specific for that type of trip - say a bathing suit, winter jacket, or ski gear.

However you do it, keeping a list makes sure you don’t forget anything or don’t bring unnecessary items you “may” need!

Keep Your Toiletries Packed

This may be the biggest game changer for me. I ALWAYS keep a toiletry bag packed. I do not unpack it when I get home, the only thing I do is refill it for when certain items get empty - such as toothpaste, shampoo, or make-up.

One key item that I keep in my travel bag is a Charging Station. This sweet gadget charges my phone, headphones, and Apple Watch all in one. It even folds up for easy storage! It stays in my travel bag and I always have a charger. No more forgetting a charger since it is already packed!

Pack Strategically

Well, sorry to say my friends, but I think this one is the hardest part! Seriously, though, why is packing so hard? And why can’t I have more than 50 lbs at the airport? The amount of times that I have to make adjustments in the airport is actually ridiculous.

All that being said - I have gotten better! Just know, if you struggle too, there is some hope!

So how does one STRATEGICALLY pack a suitcase you may be wondering?

Well, step one starts with a list. But since you have already done that step two is to lay out everything you need before putting it in your suitcase (I am quite guilty of not doing this). But the reason is so you know exactly what you have and can add and remove items, and not randomly shove things you “may” need.

Easy ways to minimize how much you pack

  • Choose items that are versatile That hot pink zebra shirt you haven’t worn in five years… probably don’t need it.

  • Choose shoes that can go with multiple outfits Shoes can quickly get out of control without adding much change in your outfit.

  • Utilize travel size containers You do not need the entire container and it is way heavier than you think.

  • Minimize Books and Gadgets Try to minimize how many items you bring. Looking to pair down? The Amazon Kindle is a great way to lighten the load and still have a selection!

  • Leave Non-Essential Items Behind Double check your “just in case” items and take some out… let’s be honest, will you really need it?

  • Start packing early! There is nothing that will stress you more and cause terrible choices than if you pack too late. You will likely throw things in at random and have no time to make edits. I like to start a week in advance, but the timeframe matters less, and how you feel about the timing matters more.
